Michele, it's good that you're nipping this thing in the bud (or at least trying to). Nervousness is a natural feeling when dealing with scammers. I'm sure a worst case scenario involves some kind of identity theft, but I don't think I gave Ginger any info that wasn't available through the phone book. Granted, having provoked Ginger to the point that s/he's calling me (repeatedly) has put me on his/her radar, which doesn't make me feel great. But I didn't give my SSN or birth date or anything (which makes Ginger's claim of an "extensive background check" so ridiculous), so I don't feel too badly about it. And I also have a phone number for Ginger now, though I suppose it was probably a payphone in a Greyhound station somewhere in Bumfuck. Anyway, please do let me know if your check arrives, and, if you have a scanner, post an image of the check (and envelope, for that matter). Like you said, we probably should've known this offer was too good to be true when we read it ($400 a week?!?!?!), but I feel like the more info posted to this site, the better informed others will be to tell Ginger to go fuck him/herself.

Perry, I've actually been Googling all morning and reading up on your struggle. You're a very entertaining writer, but the whole thing honestly makes me a little nervous! Perhaps this is because my friend who informed me of the scam is a hypochondriac and felt the need to point out the worst case scenario. Anyway, I emailed good old Ginger a little while ago informing HIM, apparently, that I wouldn't be able to complete the task, blahblahblah. Of course, "the check is on the way" and I was instructed to cash it and wire the money, then submit my report whenever I had the opportunity to-no rush.

Fat chance, Ginger.

Good luck in your dealings with Ginger, Michele. Once the check goes out, he's like a dog with a bone (yes, "he"). Also, good luck sending the check back, as it will probably come from a shell company. Here's a couple more posts documenting the ongoing saga: here and here.

I applied to this and got the exact same email too. I know a bunch of people are telling you this, and I don't want to be repetitive, but I feel like an idiot for not realizing that this is check fraud scam. I knew the whole thing sounded fishy ... AND too good to be true ... but only after talking to one of my financially wise friends did I realize the danger of this situstion. Apparently, my check is on the way, and when I get it I plan on sending it right back to good old Ginger. I was just looking for some extra freelance work ... I wasn't interested in getting involved in a scam.

i think these scams were created by the Internet itself as it becomes more and more self-aware. It's scamming humans out of money in order to build the killer robots that will ultimately enslave and exterminate us.
